some ppl like to remove dell controlpoint, it takes up some HDD space, but personally i leave it on because it comes in useful sometimes.

the one thing you should really do as soon as you get it is replace the crappy stock thermal paste.

I can't say I'd recommend that. For the average user that's a complex task and has a high risk of damaging the system by accident.

The "crappy thermal paste" is in fact not crappy, or else Dell wouldn't sell it in their business class products.

In short, unless you absolutely know what you're doing I cannot recommend this.

    1) it is crappy, and very sloppily applied, its all over everything. replacing it gives you a 10*c drop in temps. unfortunately its the same stuff that goes into their consumer devices too.

    2) dell has service manuals online that show you step by step how to access components, even a newbie can understand

    3) there are many guides on how to apply thermal paste.

to the OP: this is thermal paste: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_grease

you can buy it online or some computer shops stock it. i'd recommend arctic cooling MX-2 or MX-3. Personally i use gelid extreme as it is almost as good as MX-3, but half the price and it comes with an applicator.

if you're not confident about applying the thermal paste, print out the relevant pages from the service manual and usually computer shops will do it for you if you buy the thermal paste from them.

The Dell business notebooks don't come loaded with bloatware.

Dell ControlPoint has several modules. The one you are most likely to need is the system manager. You may not need the security manager and communications manager modules.

agreed, the communication manager seems to only be really useful if you have the WWAN module. without the security manager you cant use the TPM or fingerprint reader etc, but if you dont use them it dosent matter if you dont install it.
