Err, you do know that you need a WWAN module present to utilize it, don't you? It's not magic.

It's no use if you don't have a WWAN module.

    See here for more info.

You get a wwan wireless card from your cell phone company for wireless internet. If they require a sim card for use then you would stick it in that slot.

So yes its useless if you are not going to shell out the money to get WWAN.

Just think about this. You can use SIM card on your cellphone because your cellphone has a built-in wireless device in it to communicate to your telecom provider. It is the same with your laptop it has a SIM card module for mobile wireless communication (data access) but you also need to have the WWAN card to be able to communicate since it did not come built-in.

WWAN installed by default will come soon enough.

I doubt it will ever come default. But the option of availability in notebooks will undoubtedly increase in the near future.

Someone needs to make a sticky saying "Yes we know your laptop has a SIM slot, here's why:"
