    Hi

I really need peoples opinions please on what laptop I should consider for my partner.

Her main use is using Word, Excel, Remote Desktop and Internet, but it also needs to be quick and last long without having to upgrade (maybe after 4 years?)

The price range max is about £650, the Vostro seems cheaper and has almost the same specs, is this correct?

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

    Many Thanks

Okay you got 2 totally different oriented machines. The XPS 15 is a consumer grade multimedia notebook while the Vostro 3700 is a business oriented notebook.

The XPS 15 offers the GT425M and up to GT435 with Core i7 processors which can handle light gaming while the Vostro 3700 base has the Intel HD graphics and offers GT330M graphics which again is moderate gaming.

The most comparable is the Vostro 3500 (15.6") while the 3700 is 17.3" but the GPU is significantly weaker.

I would go for the Vostro, though it is as capable as the XPS 15, it is business oriented. Parts will be readily available years down the line unlike consumer models. They are better built, and business warranties are better than consumer models.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply, I meant to say in my thread are the Studio 15 and Studio 17 good models for her needs, or is the Vostro still the way to go :)

    Many Thanks for your response

    HI

I have also been pointed towards the Dell Inspiron 15, sorry to be a pain, but how do the Vostro and Inspiron 15 compare?

I just really want to make the right choice.

    Many Thanks

Err...that is a complete drop. Are you talking about the Inspiron 15 or the N5030 (15R), they are completely different. The Inspiron 15 is a very basic notebook, no upgrades available from Dell. 15R is a bit higher end. I would take a Vostro over both, you can't beat business.

    Hi there

I did mean the 15R, so Vostro is still a better maching than the 15R, is there much difference in price do you know?

Thanks again for your responses :)

Depends on which 15R you get, they can get pricey with Core i5, 5650 graphics, 6 GB RAM. Base Vostro and 15R should be the same so I would take the Vostro.

Go for a Latitude E5510/E6510 if you can, and get the HD+(1600x900) or FHD(1920x1080) display with it. (if you want a discrete GPU, go for the E6510) Don't leave HD(1366x768) selected.

Those high-res are a LOT nicer than the 1366x768 you would get on the Vostro 3500, and have a higher pixel density than the 1600x900 in the 17.3" Vostro 3700.

Higher-resolution displays give you more display area to work with because they make content slightly smaller.

The XPS 15 offers the best display (B+RGLED 15.6" 1080p, if you choose that option) but it's not a business-class notebook

Would an i3 processor and 4gn of Ram be quick, would it also be enough for her usage needs?
