All I can tell from the product listings on the Dell website is the 6500 is available in Blue and Red optionally. Are there any hardware differences? The screen options seem different too, but I can't tell anything else.

Dell refers to the E5400/E5500 as the 'Essential' models and the E6400/E6500 as 'Mainstream' models. Essential = basic (in this equation).

    The dimensions are as follows-

    E6500- 14.1"x10.1"x1-1.3", starting weight of 5.2lbs

    Construction-
E5500- Durable polycarbonate and aluminum LCD back & Base
E6500- Magnesium Alloy LCD back & Base

    Display choices-
E5500- WXGA, WXGA+ or WXGA+ TrueLife (Glossy) *all with CCFL backlighting
E6500- WXGA, WXGA+ (LED backlighting) or WUXGA (1920x1200)

    Optical drive-
E5500- Fixed CD RW or DVD RW drive
E6500- E-modular bay- optical drive (DVD-ROM, CD RW or DVD RW), 2nd Hard Drive or Travel Lite Module

    Standard features only on E6500-
Smart Card Reader & Contact-less Smart Card Reader
Dual Pointing Devices (touchpad & Trackstick) *optional on E5500
    1-USB/eSATA combo port

    Options only offered on E6500-

    Bluetooth with UWB (Ultra-Wide Band)
nVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M dedicated graphics card
    Solid State (SSD) drives

Oh, and the E5500 has an S-video port and the E6500 has a DisplayPort connection....

And the E6500 has a standard 3-year Limited Warranty with Mail-In Service compared to 1-year on the E5500...

I wish I had the answer for you, but I suggest going to the E5500 product page (LINK) and click on the 'Live Chat' option for their 'Sales Experts'. Hopefully they can give you a detailed, correct answer.

The E5500 itself connects to an external monitor by VGA port. It also has S-Video, but are there even monitors with S-Video connections? If you add the E-Port Replicator Docking Station, it adds DVI and DisplayPort connections. But I'd rather just get the E6500 that comes with both VGA and DisplayPort standard.

If you decide to purchase the E5500, I highly recommend the upgrade from WXGA to WXGA+ display! The max brightness increases from 220 niits to 250 nits AND the viewing angles are significantly better than the WXGA. I've seen both displays side-by-side and it's the best $50 you can spend! :D

There should be no problem plugging in another monitor via VGA and either mirroring or extending your desktop.
You simply plug it in, and use FN+F8 to switch between multiple monitor configurations.
