This has been happening quite often to me: on my E6400 the screens will suddenly go blank and then come back on, the following flag come up:

"Display Driver Intel Graphics Accelartor drivers for Windows XP (R) has stopped and has successfully recovered."

I have updated this driver, why does it say "for Windows XP" when im using win 7?

Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

EDIT:also just ran Intels driver update utility and its telling me my drivers are up to date.

Do you run many programs set to compatibility mode with Windows XP?

Have you tried uninstalling the existing driver and using either the newest driver from Dell or the newest generic driver from Intel that matches your chipset?

regarding compatibility-not that I know of...

In order to uninstall a driver first-I go to DM and just remove and then download the new one?

Yes. Uninstall via DM. Have the new downloaded driver file prepared from either the Intel website or from the Dell product support page for the E6400.

Have you considered repasting your CPU/GPU? E6400 has pretty easy access to both. This is from Dell's service manuals. Also clean out all the dust/crud in your fan, clean out the heatfins. Make sure you ground yourself, and the fan does not spin freely as this will ruin the bearings as well as possibly fry your motherboard.

    The problem is back.
My temp begins to skyrocket (close to and some times over 100) and then the driver disables and recovers on its own. Its still saying Windows XP though.
I installed the driver for windows 7.

    What am I doing wrong?

Are you talking about your IGP? I've never seen IGP get that hot except poor heatsink seating and a severely clogged fan.

If you constantly have drivers crash, try a clean install of your OS and the latest Intel IGP driver. Run memtest for a few passes. If you still have issues, could be a bad motherboard.

    CPU temp (via I8kfangui).
My operating mode was on "manual temp control"-is that right?
    I changed it to auto....

I dont think I know what memtest is.

Is there an "instructions" thread or doc somehwere on how to reinstall an OS? I dont think I can do it on my own.
Also-ive never cleaned out the fans and/or vents. Any instructions on how to that would be helpfull too.
    Thanks.
