Do you have an e-port or e-port plus replicator? Do you like it?

I haven't tried booting without external power but everything keeps going (except the external screen) if the mains power goes off. However, I have to move the external monitor to open up the E6400's screen in order to carry on working.

I just checked and my M4400 boots no problem on the dock without the power connected. I know a D830 and E5400 will also do this from some users complaining their computer will not turn on... I found their computers docked with a dead batteries and the power unplugged...

Thanks for all the info again, everyone.

My new eport plus replicator showed up today. I am using it with my new m4500. So far I'm enjoying it, just what I needed with having to install so many cables when coming and going.

As you guys said, the release mechanism is a bit terse, it could certainly stand to be softened and refined.

Do either / neither of the docking stations support USB 3.0 if the docking computer does?

E-Ports today only support USB 2.0.

If you have an external drive, maybe use the ePort's eSATA port for high speed drive external storage? Otherwise, on the M6500, the USB 3.0 ports are on the left side, so technically they are still easy to access when the notebook is docked.

Otherwise, if you are looking at USB 3.0 on the E-Port for the sake of future-proofing... you'll have to wait longer.

The statement about the notebook cooler is incorrect. I'm using a notebook cooler with my dock and it works out great.

    The zalman zm-NC-1000

The zalman zm NC series is easily one of the best, if not THE best notebook cooler. I did my research. It's built better than the laptop.
