I am considering getting Latitude E6420 and at the moment Dell Outlet has reasonably priced E6420 with 9 cell battery.

Does the 9 cell battery stick out? If so, is it noticeable? Is it bothersome when using the laptop on the lap?

    Many thanks.

I don't know about the E6420, but I am pretty sure it is the same like whit the E6320, where the 3-(or 4?)-cell is flush, the 6-cell sticks out (its like a block 1x1 inch sticking out) and the 9-cell adds some height to this block so its 1x2 inches.

    edit:

maybe you should ask that in the E6420 owners thread

Yes, the 9-cell battery noticably sticks out. But you certainly notice the extra runtime it gives you. It's not really a huge bother after you get used to it.

Whether or not the battery sticks out is a matter of personal preference. Some people hate it, while some people love it for differing reasons. There should be pics from NBR or Dell with the 9 cell, I don't think it sticks out much and don't mind it. Check it out yourself and see if you are fine with it.

isn't there a higher risk of damaging the "holding mechanism" or whatever it's called?

Are you referring to the battery latch? No just being a 9 cell battery won't. You cause more wear by constantly removing and installing the battery to the latch.

The only thing that's annoying is that any accidental impact is more likely to clip/hit/impact the battery first. But, if you're careful, should not be an issue.
