I just saw 16gb as an option on the M4500 (2x8gb), but the option alone is like $4500 (!!!!!). At those prices it is cheaper to get a M4500 with 8gb AND a desktop with 16gb, but I'm sure it will go down sooner or later

Yes, you can get 8x2 on an M4500. The cost on my premier is a $3400 option. However, just like any build, buy low, upgrade high. Point being.. it's possible.

I just noticed this was a ressurected thread.

I am too looking for a notebook with similar configurations, but would prefer either a latitude or a thinkpad as they are designed with the enterprise customers in mind.

The 15" business models w/ 4 SODIMM slots would be the W510 and HP 8540w (w/ quad core).

just a friendly note, i'm a product developer for a bunch of JEE based products, and if you don't know about JEE it's a memory hog, big time. Anyways, the M4500 with 820QM and 8 gigs of RAM lets me run 3 vmware workstation virtuals with 2 GIGs of ram allocated each without much slow down.

that said, i'm patiently awaiting the 8 gig dimms so i can bounce up to 6 virtuals (the less i colocate on a JEE instance, the better i can test a distributed environment.

As to SQL SErver and Exchange, you can run those bad boys with very little ram for development in my experience, so you could probably get up to 5 or 6 virtuals going no problem with 8 gigs.

"As to SQL Server and Exchange, you can run those bad boys with very little ram for development in my experience". I have created a virtual machine with SharePoint 2010, SQL 2008, Active Directory etc. and it runs pretty well with more than 5 gbs of RAM. So on my 8 gig laptop I am reduced to running only 1 virtual machine. I would love a 16 gb laptop!

It is amusing to see all the responses that say "you don't need 16 gb". Like who asked you? How can you decide someone else doesn't know what they need? We really love to give our opinion even when it is not asked for.

Take a look at the new M4600 & M6600, both support up to 32GB.

    1. This thread is pretty old, no real need to resurrect it.

    2. Majority of users who ask for more than 4GB do not ever require more than that. If you want to spend money on something that you don't need, that's your prerogative but if you really need it, there are lots of people here who are knowledgeable in the way to minimize your cost.
