I have this e4200 and today while it was on the monitor went completely dead, the other strange thing is that the front leds (wifi, BT, caps lock) were also dead. The leds on the back panel were instead both on. So I opened and closed the lid and tilted the computer sideways and it came back on.

could this be a loose cable somewhere?

update: as I was typing it just happened again, It kept going into sleep and as soon as I would raise it from the desk it would wake up and when I put it back down it goes to sleep....what?!? I've never seen anything like this.

any ideas? some go to sleep function perhaps? what detects that the lid is closed?

2nd update: ok this is getting really annoying. I just picked it up and it went to sleep, reset it on the table and woke up, and so on.

Is it sleeping? Do you have it set to login when resuming from sleep such that you can tell that it was sleeping? Have you checked the sleep settings... perhaps they were set to very fast? Reset them. Perhaps the lid switch is faulty, causing the closed lid function (sleep?) to invoke.

yes it was indeed sleeping as I always got to the login screen. I did check all the sleep options in the power management so that should be out.

perhaps is the lid switch, but is it so sensitive that as soon as the back or front rubber feet touch the desk it goes to sleep? in 10 years of IT this is the 1st time I see such thing.

I wonder what triggers lid sleep... latch, hinges, lid proximity to near closed...

Can you disable lid sleep to dismiss the fault?

Hmm if it is sleep from thinking the lid is closing how about going into power options and setting it so that when the lid closes it does nothing.

That way if the problem stops you can pinpoint what areas to look at.
