guys i have to bring this up again. i got the intel 5100 but things have not changed. the connection is so slow. the 3 years old mac that sits even farther from the router gets much more consistent speeds and connections.
any ideas? at this point doesn't sound like a wireless card problem.

Now that the hardware has been ruled out, you'll probably need to reinstall Windows...

Purge Intel wifi software values from the registry and reinstall. Make sure your backup your registry first.

i am not even using the intel software. also i can't find any intel drivers on the dell website. what driver are you guys using, the ones from intel's website?

this is only a 3 weeks old installation of win 7 64 pro and i really have installed only a few programs. i just dont see what could make this so slow.

Was it always slow or just since reinstalling the OS?

Go to Intel's site and download the latest driver.

Also have you tried that 5100 in another laptop? Your mini PCI-e slot may have issues.

How can we exclude antenna problems causing weak signal strength? My first thought is to put the computer next to the router and see if that gives good wireless throughput.

i think it has always been this slow. then again i dont have any hard data on hand

unfortunately i can't test it on another machine, unless i can test it on my GF macbook but i am not sure if the wireless card is too accessible there.

if i get closer to the router the speed improves. i have to test both computers closer to the router.

could it be a MB issue?

I'm therefore wondering if it is an antenna related problem and nothing to do with the card or the driver setup. If, for example, one of the cables is damaged then you will only get good throughput if very close to the router. Once the signal becomes weak then the connection will run slower and/or have a lot of errors. One experiment would be to see whether disconnecting (in turn) one of the antenna cables affects the wireless performance.
