I haven't looked at the E5400 / E5410 in detail but I would assume that the main differences are internal. ie different Intel CPUs and chipset.

I suggest that you study the Setup and quick reference guide for both the E5400 and the E5410. Report here is there are significant differences.

The E5400 uses an older family of Intel processors with slower DDR2 RAM. Dell stock and sells older models for business users, since many enterprises already have large fleets of these older machines and need to order additional units. In any case, Dell tends to stock older business systems as long as there are outstanding warranties.

Unless you prefer obsolete 2008 vintage hardware for a specific reason, you're probably better off with the newer E5410. Actually, you should really ask yourself why you're considering the E54xx series when the E6410 sells for such a small premium, but comes with a 3 year warranty. I have the impression that the all-metal case E6410 is much more popular that the cheaper plastic E54x0 series, which is precisely why there is so little user contributed information about the E54x0 online.
