I got a second hand e6400 (nice machine!) with a used 9 cell battery, running Win7.

Reading some previous posts here, I see I should be getting may 6-8 hours out of the battery, but currently I'm lucky to get 3 hours, even on Power Saver mode.

The BIOS reports that the battery is healthy. Is there a way to check number of discharge cycles? Should I just get a new battery?

    Thanks.

You can use HWMonitor, etc, to check the actual WHr capacity of the battery. I think it should be somewhere between 80WHr to 90WHr with no wear. I don't think the Dell BIOS starts reporting that a battery is "bad" until it gets near 50% (but don't quote me on that).

You can also use perfmon or RMClock, etc, to check your actual power draw on battery.

Hi, your laptop's battery has probably started to lose its capacity. this is a normal process for Li-on batteries - they wear off after some time, depending on the user and how took care of his battery.
If you want a nice tool to monitor the battery's health/status use this:
    BatteryCare
