Is there any reasonable way to get digital audio out of the E6400? IE without adding a usb sound card or something. I thought the displayport would send the digital audio to my Dell 3008 display but does not work.

Take a look at this thread. A user there reports that he managed to get audio through the DisplayPort on one TV but not another one. Apparently the standards are still a bit fuzzy, but the E6400 should be able to send audio out according to that user.

Since both the E6400 and the external display are Dell, why don't you give them a call?

I did call Dell. They had very little documentation on interfacing the 3008 to the E6400. At first they spent 10 minutes telling me that monitor is not compatible, never mind the digital audio interface. Half an hour later they basicly had no information on digital audio out on the E6400 other than for HDMI which they had some reference to but no information on how to use or configure.

That is very strange. Did you ask for a tech to go to your home to do that? You are probably entitled to that because of the business support.

No, this was premium tech support. No tech has come out.

    Hi all,
I'd just like to confirm that DisplayPort used in Dell E6400 passes the sound as well. I used regular HDMI cable and a very cheap DisplayPort to HDMI adapter form this site:
    http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/displayport-to-hdmi-adapter.html
I connected it to a probably 2008 HannSpree LCD. When I plugged in the cables, laptop discovered external TV and I could send Video onto the screen but with no sound. I went to Audio properties and changed the Sound playback to HDMI. Still no sound. So went there again and in Advanced properties I have found a ticked box saying sth like "Deactivate Digital Sound Output" Cleared the box, applied changes and I could finally hear the sound on my TV :)
I hope this will help some of you. If you still have troubles or you won't find those properties I can post some screenshots later, just let me know.

Well I have a E6400 laptop with displayport connector, a Dell 3008 display with digital audio controls and speaker connections and the Dell displayport cable to connect them. The digial audio does not work and Dell has no idea why or even if it should. Next to NO information available on the 3008 monitor or the displayport connections.

Do you have a sound system/separate amp with a digital out?
If so, just get the Audio Advantage Micro which can turn any USB port into a Digital Audio out. Jack right into that and voila, youve got digital audio.

Can you help me out with this one? My E6400 is downgraded to XP SP3 as well but I can't seem to find the audio controls you're talking about. I even updated the audio driver and the video driver to the latest from Dell's site but still no luck.

Do you have an application of some kind installed coming from the audio chip vendor? I only have the windows native Volume Control.

EDIT: I figured it out. The controls appear once the laptop is connected to an HDMI device. An 'HDMI' device appears in Windows.
