    Hi all,

Please share your Intel Graphics settings with me. The E6400 I recently purchased is extremely washed out compared to my Lenovo T60. Thanks!

Also, does your screen flicker when it's on battery?

When I first got my E6400 over 18 months ago I noticed that the display (LPL panel) was a bit washed out. My fix was to reduce the brightness down to about 70% and then it looked fine. Full brightness is only needed for working in the sunshine. More recently, however, I found that I needed to increase the brightness slightly and I wonder whether Dell had reduced the maximum brightness during the BIOS updates.

Therefore (i) make sure you are running the latest BIOS (A20) and (ii) try turning the brightness down to about 75%.

Backlight flicker is sometimes noticeable at the minimum brightness. It's a side effect of the method for dimming the LEDs - turning them off for part of the time. The flicker isn't normally noticeable if you increase the brightness by one or two steps.

Thanks for your reply John, but I've already lowered the brightness to 70% and it still isn't as good as my T60's LCD. Strange.

From what I read, my T60 has a ISP screen and my Dell E6400 has a LED screen. Would that be the problem? Do you know of any laptops that have ISP screens these days? Much appreciated. Thanks!

Ah! An IPS screen (more here)! They are hard to find. Perhaps the extra cost meant low demand.

Note, however, that the IPS is the way the LCD part of the display is manufactured while the LEDs used in many new display are for the backlighting (uses less power than the CCFL backlights). There's no reason I can think of why one cannot have an LED backlight IPS panel, but I don't know if any exist.
