Occurred randomly, I've had this laptop since new. So I resume from standby (a deep one) in which I put it in standby when the battery was low and wham get two BIOS beeps that the laptop isn't getting enough juice, battery won't charge, and it's throttling performance.

Outlet doesn't matter, its all good power. I tried a different battery, no good. Dell is replacing the motherboard (got to love that warranty). Power adapter still runs the laptop but it runs at 625mhz on the P8600 so it's not fun.

Any way to speed this up? I just want to make it through finals this week. Whats going on with the mobo power adapter? Just slowly dying? Temps get high on the Intel and memory 59C-63C when stressed, cpu is cool though.

Sounds like an unidentified charger, I would cancel the motherboard and replace the power jack first (on the E-series, the jack has a connector and isn't soldered).

Dell tells me mobo removal is needed to replace DC input jack anyway. I'm going to have them do both.

Check and make sure all screws on the bottom are still there and tight...

That's true, but I would replace the jack only and see what happens. I try to avoid refurbished motherboards if possible, you never know...

As an ASP from Dell, nearly ALL warranty parts are refurbished, drives, motherboards, AC adapters, the works. Honestly as long as you have warranty left, does refurbished make a difference? Official Dell refurbished parts have a 90 day warranty or the balance of the manufacturer warranty, whichever is longer.

Well Dell replaced the motherboard and d/c input power cable jack. The tech installing said it was a new motherboard (b/c it did some manufacturer boot sequence). Problem fixed for 1 day. Now it is back, sometimes randomly charges. I'm working on Dell sending me a replacement A/C adapter.

They also installed a keyboard b/c the other ones were sticky...new one has backlit which I didn't have before. Awesome! And the keys are so much more improved than before.

Still running at 625mhz which is a pain. Oh and the tech used thermal paste, not pads!
