The backlight in my (Samsung) E6400 screen has recently died, and it doesn't appear to be a cable fault, so I'm looking to buy a new panel. All the debate from a year or two ago seemed to focus on the inferiority of the Samsung panel, designated SEC5442, compared with the preferred LG LPL0140. These are the hardware ids for the two panels, but those aren't much use for trying to obtain a replacement, and yield little or nothing of relevance on web or ebay searches.

The label on my panel specifies it's an LTN141BT01, and I think I've established that the LG has product code LP141WP2TLB1. Both are readily available via ebay here in the UK with a small but not insignificant price premium. There's an A2 version of the LG too, and it's often available cheaper than the B1, but I think it's gloss finish.

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct code, and is the consensus of opinion still that the LG is substantially better and thus worth paying extra for? For reference, I was actually quite happy with my Samsung as I think I'm not at all sensitive to deficiencies in colour reproduction and for general Windows use I tend to value brightness over contrast, but I know it was far from perfect and I might as well turn this into an opportunity to upgrade if I can.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Would your machine not be under warranty, in which case Dell would replace the panel.

Sorry, completely forgot to explain that part. The laptop is itself originally an ebay purchase (in retrospect quite a misguided one), and after repeated calls to Dell customer services I established that the service tag isn't recognised by Dell in the UK or even in a valid format, so they can't offer me any warranty cover.

FWIW, I have the SEC5442 WXGA+ 14.1" 16:10 on a E6400 and like you, I have no problems with its image quality.
