    Hi people,

Could you tell me the model numbers for the WXGA+ screens?
I know there's a LG and a Samsung one, right? Which one is the better of the two and what are the differences?
I found a shop which might be able to get me a screen cheap but i have to give them specific info on which panel i need.

    thanx

    One WXGA+ is the CMO1436.
The Chi Mei screen is OK, pretty average overall in terms of viewing angles, brightness, and colors. The screen I had initially (which had several dead pixels so I got rid of it) was the LG model (not sure of model #), which was similar to the CMO but was noticeably brighter.
I know there is also an AUO (AU Optronics) screen that's used, but I'm not sure how great that is, and I haven't even heard of a Samsung one in the E6400.

Oh, and this is for the E6400.

My LG panel is LPL0140 and is, as you say, very bright. That said, when new it was so bright that it washed out at full brightness and this now seems less of a problem. I suspect that Dell reduced the maximum brightness in one of the BIOS updates during the past 15 months since LED backlights, unlike CCFL, don't fade with age.

There is also a Samsung panel. Early reports indicated that it was less good than the LG and it is possible that Dell have dropped it in favour of other sources.

John is correct with the Samsung and LG comparison, but it's not all that noticeable to the naked eye. I have briefly noted this in my Precision M2400 review:

Note that the M2400 has the exact same chassis as the E6400.

I'm not sure if the screens are the same as the D620/D630, but replacement screens for the D620/D630 are now Samsung screens, and while they are brighter, they are very washed out. I personally would steer as far away from Samsung displays as possible (I swapped my replacement LCD out with the LG Philips one in my spare D620).

I believe the D620/D630 uses LCD screens while the E6400 series uses LED panels.

LED is an option, but CCFL is available (standard) too. Since they're both 14.1" widescreens, I think they might be identical.

Ouch....David, being a reviewer you REALLY can't make this mistake ;)
Both are LCD panels, it's only the backlighting that's different. One uses LED and the other CCFL...for the same panel.

Thanks for the info, i'll see if i can get a quote for the LG screen.

    @Robin
Could you tell me the hardware-id for the panel in your D620 maybe? Easy enough to tell if they're the same.

The E6400 initially had a WXGA CCFL display standard and it could be upgraded to a WXGA LED or better. But for the last six months or so, ALL E6400s have had standard LED displays...at least her in the U.S.

Is there any way for me to get it without taking apart the laptop? I tried PC Wizard, and it said "Manufacturer: TM246 141 WP1".

I may still have the packing slip from the replacement panel, but I would have to find it when I'm at home.
