    I'm trying to connect a U2711 to a e6410 (via a docking station).

Monitor is supposed to go to 2560 x 1440.

Max res I can get (VGA) is 2048 x 1152.

    With DVI-I I can get only 1920 x 1200

Display Port is not even recognized.

    Any suggestions?

Which GPU do you have? Might it be nVidia?According to the man ufacturer's specs, the Intel chipset supports up to 2560 x 1600 but the nVidia NVS 160M supports only up to 2048 x 1536.

The fact that you are not being offered 2048 x 1536 may be due to downscaling based on the display's aspect ratio. Did you try deselecting the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" in the display properties.

The monitor/laptop will only display 2560x1440 via displayport. you will need to get that working. Been there and done the same thing with the 30" version.

Thanks for that (and thanks to John R, and it is the Intel GPU I'm using).

I just got off the phone with Dell. As an aside, I was impressed with the promptness with which my call was handled. (Of course, it perhaps helped that I paid the premium for "Pro Support").

Having determined that we needed to get the DisplayPort working we messed around for a very long time. Dell rep thinks that it may be a monitor issue. The E6410 seems to recoginze that it's connected to a U2711 monitor, but the monitor behaves like it's not connected to anything (that is, when it is connected via DisplayPort).

It works reasonably well as a VGA monitor at 2048 x 1152, although even then none of the OSD buttons on the display are functioning. The only button which has any functionality is the "Exit" button, and when it is pressed the monitor displays an icon in the shape of a padlock. One of the OSD menus controls (according to the manual) the video source, so presumably it defaults to VGA and if I could access the menu and change it to DisplayPort my problem would be solved.

Dell has offered to send a new (refurb) monitor, but I'm holding off out of fear that the problem relates to some extraordinary stupidity on my part. (And I have downloaded the latest drivers).

As for the E6410, I doubt that it's related, but if the E6410 goes into sleep mode while it is connected to the external monitor it will not recognize the monitor when it wakes up (except that it sees a "generic" monitor to which it connects at a very low resolution. I then need to reboot, and upon restarting it will recognize that it's a U2711, but still gives me a very low resolution until I manually reset the resolution via the control panel. If, on the other hand, if it goes into "sleep" mode when it's NOT connected to the monitor or the dock (that is, when I bring it home at the end of the day) it finds the monitor and connects at the correct resolution right away. Very strange (but as I understand that the E6410 has some issues with awakening (as do I at times:) )

I would take the offer about the monitor. That way, if the same behavior exists on both monitors, then the problem probably isn't with the monitor. You don't have to take the exchange, you can return either one if you don't like the refurb. They just want a monitor back.
