I have an e6400 at work and it has a smartcard reader built into the left isde of the palm rest.

Im trying to configure an e6410 on the dell site, but there is no option to select a cardreader built in.

The only options i get for smartcard reader are under "security":

Smartcard: HID Crescendo iCLASS Proximity Card with C700 Contact Smart Chip [€ 50.00]

Omnikey 3121 Standard Base External USB Smartcard Reader [€ 65.00]

Buy Smartcard and Smartcard Reader - get 10% discount [€ 105.00]

which one of those is the built in smart card reader?

    My E6410 US order confirmation:
-- Fingerprint Reader and Contactless Smart Card --
-- No Fingerprint Reader and No Contactless Smartcard Reader
    -- [330-7356]

I did not want it, I did not order it, and I suspect I did not get it. Can't recall if there is a smart card slot on the side... I don't have the machine here.

I've got the slot in the side (I think it is standard) but no contactless reader.

Thanks, John, I was vaguely recalling that but could not confirm and knew I did not get something... the contactless reader. And I'm also vaguely recalling that the contactless reader *was* standard on the E6400?

Can anyone comment how is the smart card reader/slot used... driver? application?

I need the slot in the side so i can insert my smart card to access my work network.

Still cannot see how i can specify this from the dell configuration page.

Call Dell and confirm that the smart card reader is standard kit.

Looking at the Large Business configuration options I can see
which I think is the contactless reader. There is no selection option for the fixed reader.

The smartcard reader is standard on the E6410. The contactless one is an option.

Yup, I second that. The standard SmartCard slot is standard (and actually not part of the palmrest), and the contactless is an option. The contactless is included if fingerprint reader is added, although I'm not 100% sure if it can be added independent of the FPR.
