That goes against the trend I have seen. I just hope they keep 16:10 as I probably won't replace my E6410 when it comes in if the E6420 goes 16:9

I am wonder if Latitude E6420 coming with new body or not:confused:. Dell has been using one design for two generations, so it is time for new body!

I actually hope not. Dell designs their mainstream business notebooks to share the same parts for 3-5 years thus reducing the burden of buying entirely new stuff. Also makes it easier on IT departments. Though the previous generation D620/D630 shared identical parts it stopped at that (IE they moved to whole new line, the current E series). I hope they keep the same design so if the E6420 ever stays 16:10 and I want to upgrade I'll be able to use all the same accessories.

Apple was partly responsible for popularizing widescreen laptops. Interestingsly, their first widescreen laptops (PowerBook G4) had a 15:10 aspect ratio, but later they migrated to 16:10. Now, most Apple laptops are still 16:10, except that the 11.6" MacBook Air is 16:9. I too hope that most Apple laptops will continue to be 16:10.

For medium-sized laptops, I do like 1400x1050 more than 1440x900 or 1600x900, but for larger laptops, I prefer 1920x1200 over 1600x1200.

It's funny you say that cause all Apple notebooks now are 16:10 screens. Also remember PowerPC Apples are 7 years old, hardly the right context to compare to today's market.

The MBA I can understand 16:9, sub 14" notebooks 1368x768 isn't an awful resolution, just not the best. I haven't ever seen 1400x1050 on a laptop before. Again, 1440x900 for me is the best resolution for 14.1", 1680x1050 for 15.4/15.6" and 1920x1200 for 17" notebooks.

The D610 was offered with that screen as an option. I got it, and it was incredible for viewing large documents. However, the laptop was a bit on the large side, so I've been sticking to 1440x900 since the D620.

Hrm well if I hope that the E6420:

Stays 14.1" and 16:10 screens. If it goes to 16:9 then hopefully a 1600x900 screen is at least an option.

Chassis design is similar to the E6400/E6410 so parts can be interchangable

Same battery life as the current generation.

If all these requirements are met I possibly could sell the E6410 when I get it and pony up to the newer model.

I hope the E6420 stays 16:10 as well. The pixel density of 1600x900 on 14" will be less than 1440x900 on 14" because of the reduced height, and on the other hand, 1366x768 is unacceptable (I have a friend with a 16" laptop with that resolution...don't know how he could stand it)...

Of course. 1368x768 is unacceptable for 14" laptops and larger. My Latitude 13 has 1368x768 which is fine because that is not a work laptop. That does very light work and Youtube/anime so 1368x768 is fine for that. But it's disgusting seeing 16" notebooks with 1368x768. In fact it should be illegal. We had a Dell Inspiron 15R with an i5, ATi 550 graphics, 6 GB RAM, and a 640 GB HDD for 950 and it had a 1368x768 resolution screen, almost made me vomit.

The 4:3 screen makes the notebook longer but not as wide...I'd take that tradeoff any day. I'm still using an old Compaq Evo N620c partly because the 1400x1050 screen is great for productivity applications.
