    I've got an E6510 with a dvd burner. Burning always fails at the end, regardless of the software used. I have an E6410, so I swapped drives and it has the same issue. Plugging in a usb dvd drive solves the problem.... so it does not appear to be a software issue.

    Any ideas?

    There are firmware updates posted on Dell's download site. You might verify the DVD drive(s) have the latest firmware. [A long shot.]

    Does your E6510 factory DVD drive work in another laptop? If yes, call Dell for warranty support; time to replace electronics in the laptop.

    I had exactly the same problem with the HLDS GU10N burner in my E6410. I phoned Dell support and, after they had made me jump through the hoop of burning a coaster using their bundled Roxio software (I normally use Nero) agreed to send me a replacement burner.

    So contact Dell support.

    Both DVD drives work in the E6410, none work in the E6510

    Updated the firmware with the same results

    If 2 dvd drives don't work in the E6510, what's the chance that the third will?

    My bios is set to RAID on... I am wondering if that is an issue.

    In my case, I had no RAID setup, but the replacement burner (Optiarc AD-7930H) has given no problems.

    Well, I decided to reinstall windows on a new HD to test my theory...

    RAID on = NO dvd burning
    ATA = NO windows install
    ACHI = everything works.

    looks like I'm in for a reload.

    So that does look as if RAID can upset the ODD burning capabilities.
