I have a new e6510 I7 laptop .I purchased an internal modem from dell and can't get it to work .tech support at dell can't get it to work either.Dell sent another modem and it won't work either.Dell tech support remoted in the the computer and tried drivers and other things to no success.Dell now wants me to reinstall the operating system .I am hesitant to do that .sometimes when I boot the computer it sees the modem and says it is ready to use .When I try to use it I get and error cant open port error 633.other times the computer does not see the modem and it does not show up under device manager.
    Any ideas?

Did you get and attach the cable? I don't remember if the system has the cable already or not, but from what I remember, the cable is what causes issues.

Also, there are (I believe) 2 different modems, you could possibly have the wrong one.

I have a Dell supplied modem in a E6410. Just sent a test fax successfully. I reimaged the machine (see link below for install order) with this driver: CONEXANT_D330-HDA-MDC-V-92-M_A01_R230790.exe. Everything appears to come up healthy and work as in the past.

    Some ideas:

o Can you disable and then re-enable modem in BIOS.

o Update device to known correct driver. Then perhaps remove device in Device Manager and reboot to discover and re-install device with that driver.

o Switch phone cable and wall connection, but that's probably not it.

o Reimage the machine, being sure to follow recommended order.

    o Make Dell fix it.
