Whilst typing, often I will hit the pointer lightly and the cursor will jump to wherever it was. Is this a problem with the touchcheck not working correctly?

    I have a E6400.

If you hit the pointer and the cursor moves, then your pointer is working properly? You can go into the Dell touchpad/trackpoint settings and disable the trackpoint if it's bothering you...
