When I did this to install Vista on an E6400, I just downloaded the driver only package, ran it to extract the driver files to a folder, then put those on a USB thumb drive, and finally loaded them from there during the OS install using either F6 to invoke the option or just selecting the load driver option during the Windows install... forget which. The Windows installer loads the driver, enables the SATA controller, and continues with the OS install.

Since my BIOS was in AHCI mode (no RAID), I never installed the Intel IRST application since it's not needed for anything related to AHCI. I recall both Dell and Intel offer the driver only package for Vista... not sure about XP.

I guess a question is, 'does F6 work when installing XP'?

F6 does work under XP but most of the time you need a working floppy disc drive which most people today don't have.

Your best option is to download the Intel SATA drivers, copy the XP disc contents onto the hard drive and use nLite to slipsteam the Intel drivers onto the XP disc contents to create the slipstreamed CD. It's simple to use and gives you a working bootable CD which you can reuse all the time.

The drivers I gave you gives you all the Intel SATA drivers needed when extracted.

Ah, it's coming back to me now... XP install only looks for a floppy. Yeah, that's a problem on the E6400.
