I've got two E6400 notebooks and between the two of them they have everything I want. Obviously hard drive and RAM are easily interchangeable; I'm assuming Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are add-on cards that can also be switched out easily. What about the motherboard, keyboard, display, and chassis?

One has NVIDIA graphics + backlit keyboard + 1440 x 900 display + heavily worn chassis; the other has Intel graphics + non-backlit keyboard + 1280 x 800 display + lightly worn chassis. Basically I'd like to swap the motherboard, keyboard, and display between the two chassis. Before I crack them open I'm just wondering if there are any kind of specialized parts or mount points or anything that might cause me problems. Any ideas?

Nvidia motherboard needs to be paired with Nvidia heatsink. Intel motherboard can use either the Nvidia or Intel heatsink.

LED display can go in CCFL lid, but CCFL display can't go in LED lid. You can just swap the entire display assembly, though.

Everything else should be the same.

You'll be able to swap the base and palmrest, but that's about it.

If you really want to change out the LCD assembly, get news ones from eBay (make sure both the bezel and back cover are for LED screens). Don't mix and match parts. While the LED display will fit in the CCFL assembly, there will be a gap, and that housing is also thicker.

Can anybody advise as to replacement motherboards for the E6400? Mine is out of warranty and flaking out and as I was looking around for a replacement it seems that there is a ton of different part numbers. If I just buy one with the nVidia chip then I should be fine, right? It doesn't matter if it's the same part # as my current one?

Don't worry about the part numbers, as long as it's the right spec, it'll work.
