I find that, when my D830 (see config below -- probably one of the worse possible configs for power use!) is on battery, it generates more heat. Why? Because the PSU has to work harder to boost (or drop) the voltage to what the CPU needs.

Blowing out the fans/heatsinks with compressed air seemed to help. Moving to the SSD (which reduces the temperatures inside the case) also was of significant benefit.

Good suggestions. Unfortunately it's totally clean. I would love to switch to an SSD but I use all of my 2x500gb hard drives in the system.

Well, it looks like a new install fixed things. Not sure why. Last time I tried this it didn't.. Oh well.. Thanks for all the suggestions.

The CPU clock speed in my D830 slows down by exactly a factor of four when on battery or when using the wrong power supply. Is there somewhat to fix this?

That's normal if SpeedStep is enabled. If there's load, it should speed back up, so it won't affect performance.

I would have thought this was normal as well but when I did a reinstall I did not experience the problems I was having before. Seems like it was some kind of configuration issue I could not nail down.
