The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Is WUXGA a good idea? Counsel me about going back to CCFL.

I'm not sure about "at your whim" but you can change the time out setting for the harddrive. So you can tell the hard drive to spin down after say 1min of inactivity instead of the standard 5 or 10mins. When it needs data from the drive, it'll automaticlly spin it back up to access it andwhen you're done it'll spin it back down. Better than a switch a think. :p

Ah, good thought -- that didn't even occur to me for some reason. Wouldn't that only cause the drive to spin down when the machine is completely idle, though? Or is there something in Vista's/7's power settings I'm missing?

If you have a HDD in the bay you can disable it whenever you want throught the "safely remove hardware" can't you? Just like you can do now with the DVD drive taking that spot.

Yeah, but what's your "on" switch in that scenario? Popping the drive out and popping it back on?

(This thread has taken a turn from WUXGA/CCFL discussion!)

I'm not sure, but I believe it will turn off when it's not accessing the drive after the allotted time. However I have no basis for this conclusion. I just ordered my 2nd HDD bay and it should arrive in a few days. I'll put a spare drive in there and give it a test. Will let you know how it goes
