I just installed an Upgrade copy of Windows 7 from XP, and by the time it was finished, I see it's taking up 100GB. Yes, I have a few pictures, but I haven't installed any programs yet. Looking at my files, Windows is only taking uo 11 GB. Any ideas what the heck happened?

No. Check Disk Management to assess disk partitions and logical drive assignments. And check some top level folders to see which might be bloated.

I just ran Disc Cleanup and one standout was "Previous Windows Installation" , which showed 68GB. I just ran it again to see where that was located, and it mysteriously doesn't appear anymore, but I'm still showing 145GB out of 160GB as being used. Not a comfy number!

    1. Is there a Windows.old folder?

    2. Use Treesize Free.

So, you've saved your previous Windows setup somehow. I always start the OS install by deleting the existing system partition, so not familiar with your result. Me, I'd start over with a clean install. If you decide to do that, you could first practice any other installs pending, knowing you are going to start over.

There is...70GB, a little more than I thought there'd be. I have all my files and folders saved from on my external drive (at least the ones I think I should have. I even used the Windows Easy Transfer to be sure. Is it OK to delete Win.old, or should I just reformat and start from scratch? If I do that, will I run into and issues using an Upgrade version of Windows 7 Pro?

Thought I was doing it right when I chose Custom Install and C (OS) as the location, assuming it would wipe XP and give me a fresh install.

AFAIK, W7 doesn't try to import settings etc (which Vista did when upgrading from XP), but it puts all your old stuff in a folder in case you remember later that you had a load of files in the My documents folder.

You should be able to delete the Win.old. And then defrag.

When you install a Windows upgrade, it looks for an existing Windows installation on the disk (which you have), or asks you to insert another Windows install disk to verify you have a legal license to be upgraded... the Dell Windows OEM DVD would suffice (or nearly any old Windows install CD). Show it the OEM DVD and then it will proceed to let you install the Windows upgrade on a blank disk. THEN you can select the option during the install to delete any existing partition, create a new one, and install Windows on a newly formatted disk. The install will automatically format the newly created system partition... much more quickly than in the old days.
