...from ebay. It does still have a warranty till 2011, however they don't know the original buyer since it was from a refurbisher. Does everyone think it would be a issue to transfer over the warranty? Also, does anyone think upgrading the warranty to include complete care would be an issue?

You may have to explain it to Dell, and convince them that it's legit, but, I think it's possible, though, I've never been in this situation.

Upgrading the warranty should not be a problem.

I have only been able to transfer 1 system (out of about 50) that I didn't know the previous registered owner. and that was after escalating the case to the vice president level within dell. It was a PITA.

So good luck with the transfer!

:/ Well, nothing yet on the transfer, but based on that I shouldn't hold my breathe though... :(

Well, if it was that easy then every stolen Dell could be easily reassigned to be 'legit' - it's not like they keep a database of that, only through third parties if you subscribe to Computrace.

I think the previous owner registered gets emailed.

Since when is Dell the Police?

They are the only vendor I know that do this. With other manf, as long as the serial # shows its in warranty, they could care less who physically holds the machine and where replacement parts are being sent.

I work for a very large university's IT dept, we have thousands of computers, mostly dell but a few HP, Micron, Lenovo etc. Dell is the only vendor we ever have problems with as far as getting warranty parts.
Sometimes our faculty get machines from research grants, which aren't necessarily registered under the university's name. We have a hard time getting warranty parts for those machines, unless we know exactly who the machine is registered to (sometimes it is registered to the faculty, sometimes the grant, sometimes a 3rd party institution that we know nothing about).

I feel your pain new, my company started to buy laptops from a third party company because it was cheaper. So when I have to get warranty parts I have to tell them at least three different places the machine might have come from.

It is a double edge sword, if Dell just transfered the warranty people would be pissed that their stolen laptops are just out there with no consequences. On the other side if they do not transfer the warranty from an unknown owner, people still get pissed.

Eitherway enjoy the machine, I have one and love it to death. Put a SSD and windows 7 and could not be happier.

I have transfered about 10 and all went through immediately except 1, i just put "John Dow" for the previous owner-

there was only one that did not xfr right away- it was a d420- it told me it would take up to 14 days- it was about 7 and i got an email that the warranty was xfered. The D420 i found out was from france- when the harddrive died it came with windows xp in french...

I think for US basaed systems it will xfr right away if you put a name ( any name ) in the previous owner box. For machines out of the us it has to be done manually

    I would not worry
