A friend has a Vostro 3550 that she connects to an external monitor but since the VGA connector on the laptop does not allow one to screw in the VGA cable the connector keeps moving out just enough to lose the signal on the external monitor.

Any suggestions on how to keep it firmly plugged in?

You could consider using electrical tape to securely tape the Dell to the VGA cable.
