I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OS on my Dell Latitude E620.

My display suddenly shifted downwards, leaving a large black stripe on top of my desktop. This also resulted in that my windows-bar is "hidden" beneath the visible portion of the screen. It seems that the text font also has got bigger.

I had started up my laptop, and after a while it locked itself. I then had to restart it (holding in the power button), and when it restarted I pressed "restore last session", and things became like now.

I tried to go into display settings and change back and forth on the resolutions there, but nothing helped. I've restarted the computer, that did not help. I've done a "system restore (recommended)" when starting the computer again, which said it would bring the computer back in a earlier state, but that did not work either. There has to be some way to calibrate the screen so it'll fix itself again? ... Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

(When I did a Print Screen, it printed the whole display with the start-bar. But the way I made it now is how I see it. I can drag the mouse beneath the visible portion, but the thing is that I can't see under there!)

Does it do the same on an external display? Would you happen to have an Nvidia graphics card?

Nothing happens when I close the lid on the laptop. It usually goes into standby, but not now for some reason. Nothing happens when I plug in the VGA cable for an external screen (Dell 22") (when the external screen is on, it says "No VGA cable", but when I plug it into the laptop it says "Entering power save")

I checked the Graphics Card under System Information, and it says "NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M.

Did you try reinstalling the graphics driver? I'm fairly certain that the graphics chip is done, though.

What the ...? I came back home and started the laptop again, and everything was normal! And after like a little while, the screen became black and I had to press the power button. Then when I started the laptop again, everything was zoomed like on the first picture! Aaargh.

I tried to go to Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies and download drivers, but when I'm trying to install them these messages come up (see pictures):

First I tried to "automatic check for drivers":

Then I tried to install it:

Then I tried to check the drivers manually and install. First 64-bit, and then 32-bit:

It didn't work. I am a little frustrated right now.

Get the appropriate nVidia driver from the D620 section of the Dell downloads. Also see if there are the same problems using a live Linux CD. If so, it is time to hope that you are covered by Dell's nVidia GPU warranty extension.

On that list, Dell Latitude D620 is represented.
Does that mean that I am covered by this deal for 60 months (5 years) from the day of purchase (which was in 2007)?

And how do I go from there to get the laptop fixed?

You can check your normal warranty status by putting the service tag into the Dell support site. The normal warranty is usually 3 years - 4 is an extra cost option. I doubt if the Dell warranty status page includes the GPU warranty extension.

To get service under the warranty you will need to contact Dell support. Be forewarned that many of the support staff seem to be unaware of the special Nvidia warranty extension so you may need to be politely persistent and refer them to the Dell Community announcement.
