In my quest to downgrade from Vista Home to Windows XP Pro on my Dell Vostro 1720 I ran into an issue.
I used a windows xp pro disk to slipstream SATA drivers and burned the iso to a dvd using nlite. Went in bios changed boot sequence from AHCI to ATA. I installed Windows XP without any problems but when I started to unzip the drivers(XP for Dell Vostro 1720) that's where the issues began. I followed the guide on Dell's website as to what should be installed first(Dell System Software) the proceeded to unzip the chipset drivers. The first one installed fine but the second one produced a rolling BSOD. It kept flashing the blue screen quickly and going to the windows didn't start normally page. I tried to go in safe mode, it didn't work and just kept looping. Someone told me that I need to install the Intel Driver - Matrix Storage Manager or slipstream the driver into another bootable .iso via nlite and just reinstall again.

Can anyone give me a bit of advice on what to do about this? It's really making me pull my hair out. I've installed Windows XP many times and never had to deal with this issue.

Also, can someone tell me what drivers work and don't work for this? Dell has 20 listed for Dell Vostro XP.

You are supposed to install it with the ahci activated. The slipstreamed drivers are there to allow you to detect the sata controller, when you switched back to ata the drivers where not needed anymore and as such were not installed.
Reinstall again but this time keep ahci active.

I changed it from ATA back to AHCI and got a stop error before xp setup install.

(0×0000007B) Am I doing something wrong in the process?
