I have a M6300 that has a 80GB hard drive that I would like to replace.

I am looking for the largest size possible with good read/write speeds.

    What do you guys recomend?

I would go to newegg.com and go with a 500gb Western Digital. They seem to be the best all rounder these days. Read the reviews.

I would rate Hitachi above WD. I recently got the WD 6400BEVT and it makes disconcerting various noises. The Hitachi 5K500.B is very quiet (but I can't comment on their 7200rpm models).

Well, partly agreed as those are the two I would look at it, WD and Hitachi...I've had good experiences with WD in the last couple of years.

I'd stay away from Seagate whatever you do.

Why's that? They're the only brand I trust my data with, and *knock on wood* they haven't let me down.

Above-average noise and the fact that they issued firmware updates last year to address various problems are two reasons why Seagate isn't on my shortlist.

I came to 5K Seagate drives from 7K Hitachis, so noise definately isn't going to be a problem for me.

I would expect them releasing firmware updates to be a good thing, no? At least they're doing QA and fixing problems (unlike other manufacturers...not specifically speaking about HDD manufacturers)...

HDDs are a relatively mature technology and normally do not need firmware updates. The fact that Seagate released HDDs with some significant problems suggests that they took the eye off the ball.

I put a 7.2k 500gb Seagate in my M6300 and another in my M6500. Made sure it did not have a built in fall sensor to avoid some of the issues. No issues at all so far. Much faster than the 5.2k seagate 250gb that was in the M6300.

I could be wrong, but I still like and trust Seagate.
