Have had two M6400 laptops both with the sound problems, sound stutters on vista start up and playing music or watching movies. Followed previous posts with none of them fixing the problem, changing BIOS, changing wireless signall. Turned off wireless with switch on the side and sound problems disappeard, finally removed dell control point software as per macicguitarist's post and sound problems have gone.

Running Vista x32, quad core, 4gb ram, wireless 5530 mobile card, wife 5100 AGN, netextreme 47xx Gig controller

FYI, I have figured out that my problems with the audio jack can be resolved by poking something metal (like a headphone plug, or a pen) towards the backside of the audio jack, shorting something, and that fixes it every time.

Anyways, I'm struggling with annoying stuttering now after fixing a horrible CPU overheating problem. I just disabled the A band, and uninstalled controlpoint. We'll see if the situation improves.

    [EDIT]
I was still getting clicking and audio hiccups. I uninstalled the IDT drivers, allowing Windows 7 to install generic High Definition audio drivers. My sound is perfect now.

The only problem is that I can't use the separate speaker and headphone devices for telephony, but I hardly found that very useful anyways. It basically allows your speaker to ring out loud even when you have headphones plugged in.
