I searched but couldn't find anything on this. I had an 8600 processor originally and got a QX9300 for my M6400. Nothing else changed (yet) and I'm running W7. The fan hardly spun up to an audible degree with the 86, but now with the QX I hear the fan all the time.

Is this normal? I mean, I know it's a quad core vs. a dual core and the clock speed is slightly faster (2.53G vs. 2.4G). But I can just have the laptop sitting doing nothing and the fan is kicked up pretty much all the time.

Anyone else do this type of upgrade and get the same results?

Hmm doesn't sound that good, maybe its throttling, either options is to underclock the cpu, or try using throttlestop, so when your working on papers, or surfing the net, watching a film that happens?

I have the QX9300 factory installed and the fan is barley audible most of the time. Sounds like you have a thermal paste probelm. I would make sure you cleaned all the surfaces with alcohol (i.e. processor surface, heat sink) and propely apply a coat of Artic Sliver 5 paste.

Well, the P8600 is only 25W, and the QX9300 is 45W, so it would be capable of using almost twice the power. Is the fan on low or high? If you applied the grease properly and it's only on low, I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as the temperatures are OK.

My 9300 isn't what is hot on my system, it's my 3700 GFX card. Are you sure it's the CPU that's hot? My GPU cycles the fan on even sitting.

The OP specifically stated he was doing nothing and hence the the CPU should have downclocked automatically. At idle, the differences in power consumption are very small btw the dual core and quad core. Most likely it's improperly applied thermal paste, as suggested before. You can also try RMClock to further undervolt.

I also agree that you probably have bad thermal contact between the CPU and the cooling system. Use HWmonitor to tell us the temperatures at idle, so we can compare to other M6400 users.

Oh, and this is a basic question, but... you did apply some thermal paste right?

Temps from this morning are below. The fan is pretty much on high all the time. The only change was the processor and yes, I used AS5. I also used proper cleaning methods, I've been building customer PC's for a very long time. The only thing I didn't do was smooth the heatpipe before reinstallation.

Maybe I'll tear it down again and redo all the thermal paste. I hate getting to the processor on this laptop though. Oh well, wanted to upgrade the memory any way.

    Thanks people...

It definitely should not be running on high. That's weird, really. You might redo the thermal paste, but I wonder if it will work, since the temperatures are just fine.

Undervolting never hurts, but it might be more cost-effective to simply get some program to control the fan speed.
