Thanks, Aikimox. Great comparison shot. Do you have any more? Looks like the W520 TN is washed out compared with the IPS (by the way, is that a big Dell or an HP or what? Looks like a Precision, 17".)

But to be fair, I'd like to see them compared from the front, as well as from various other angles. Especially the head-on frontal would give a clear indication of the quality differences. Looks like the IPS has at least twice the color depth as the TN. TN is 6 bit, right? And the IPS ... 10 bit?

    Lucky guy. Congratulations.

What kind of screen does it have? IPS or not? If IPS, I'm very interested in seeing some photos of this beauty in action.

Tomcom2k: you have a slew of fine machines in your sig. Have you owned them all, used them each extensively, etc.??

Unfortunately it's not the IPS display.

I have a 27" imac with an IPS display that I use as my primary display with DP in.

Should the machine arrive Monday (one UPS says tomorrow, one says tuesday) I'll take some pics and do a little review (which i suck at).

    Laptops in my sig:

20" M2010, had for a year, MB failed sold it for what I paid, awesome machine
20" HP HDX, had for 8 months, not as good as the M2010
17" TOSHIBA X300, had for 4 months, was OK
18" SONY AW, had for 9 months, first RGBLED screen, loved it, sold for i7 line
HP ENVY 15, still have (mrs has it) runs a little to warm but overall great machine
18" TOSHIBA X505, had for 4 months, OK machine, poor display, average graphics.
MACBOOK 13, had for 5 days, underpowered and at the time office 2008 was the only office available for mac and that sucked.
17" DELL M6500, had for 14 months, best machine i've owned, main board died, got a replacement which i sold for more than I originally paid.
DELL XPS 1645, had 2 months, bought for £700 as a stepping stone machine, noisy, hot, but i7, 8gb ram, 256gb for £700 was great
MACBOOK PRO 17, had for 1 month, not a bad machine but not worth the money vs the M6500 in respects to heat and overall performance
LENOVO W520, had for 2 weeks. Found optimus to be annoying, manually switching to intel graphics disabled displayport. Poor SSD performance (which may have been a fault). And the M6600 was released...

I don't have any more pics and the HP 8740w (on the right) is gone.
But you can check the second post here. Dell RGBLED TN vs HP IPS.

OK, yes, I remember seeing that post of yours some time ago. Excellent comparison with the AW screen (a TN FHD, no?).

    Thanks for the link!

I agree that the DreamColor screen is the best I've ever seen on a laptop, +++. Gorgeous. Gonna be interesting to see the refresh of the EliteBooks!!

When I ordered my M6600 I thought about battery life being better with one of the quadros due to optimus, but I didn't feel the premium price was worth it, especially as good as the firepro M8900 looks in benchmarks.

Then I thought about my usage and how I usually have Solidworks (CAD software) open, so even if I had sprung for an nvidia gpu, I probably wouldn't notice a battery life improvement because my usage would keep the gpu running most of the time, regardless of switchable graphics. That realization sealed the deal for me choosing the firepro.

Can someone, possibly havoctex?, confirm if M6600(w/ M8900,3000M,4000M) supports audio via:

    1. built-in HDMI
    2. built-in DisplayPort (Is this DisplayPort Plus or just plain ol DisplayPort?)
    3. E-Port Plus DisplayPort Plus

    Thanks!

I'm also wondering the same. The thing is that - with most consumer laptops having the 5.1 sound cards (and outputs - both analog and digital) these days - it seems strange to me that the Precisions are only stereo.

Of course I'm going to use mine with professional apps (mostly CAE), but it'd be nice to be able to play back a BD disk in it's full glory. Also, I do video editing as a serious hobby, and would like to add a 5.1 surround sound sometimes...

How do we go around this? The owners of previous generation Precisions should know by now!
