    Hi Guys,

Looking for a guide on setting up server 2008R2 on this laptop. Currently can't even get a network driver running! (tried a bunch on Win7x64 one's from the dell site)

Have tried the search, and read through as many of the 415 pages on the m6600 owners thread as I could before my eyes started bleeding, but couldn't find any practical advice.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. Really just need to get it running Hyper-V realiably, anything above that is gravy.

    Mucho Thankos,

    rob

Extract the driver for Windows 7 x64 and then go into the device manager and manually install it that way. ALL Windows drivers for Windows 7 work with 2008R2. Just some exes and driver software look for windows 7 string and if it's anything different it wont install.

Doing it manually bypasses that. 99.999 percent of the time lol

VMware workstation 8 or VMWare player (free), either will allow you to create a server 2k8 image that will run ontop of the windows 7 host. This way you get the best of both worlds, you run the approved drivers for windows 7 on your laptop and then on the 2k8 server you install the VMware tools which takes care of all the drivers. I do this with my machine and the server vm's even seem to run faster than when they are installed on physical hardware.

I found this site helpful Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! -, it's geared towards running 2008r2 as a workstation but there are some helpful hardware / driver tips. I use virtualbox to run 2008r2 as a guest vm on a w7 host and it runs great for my needs. However, I doubt it is capable of a emulating the hardware required by Hyper-V server role.

I'd be interested in hearing how you make out. I have been thinking about trying a 2008r2 install on a m6600 but don't have much confidence that Optimus & 2008r2 will play very well together.

Don't use hyper-v on a notebook, because the computer cannot hibernate or sleep if you turn on Hyper-V.

Thanks for the link. It is pretty clear actually.

Anyway, the official complete driver for Windows 7 can be downloaded from this link Precision M6600 Windows 7 Driver CAB - Enterprise Client - Wiki - Enterprise Client - Dell Community

I got everything working except the bluetooth module. I am reading one of the link talking about that. Seems like it's not a straight forward driver installation for the bluetooth devices.

    Now I can happily run Hyper-V :)
