My understanding is that the ATI cards do not support 10 bits per channel, which the panel requires (or at least requires to function optimally).

Strange... I thought it was only the case for Intel graphics...

According to the spec sheet, they do support 10-bit per channel.

As to why Dell doesn't offer the configurations, it's totally up to them to decide.

The reason Dell went against ATI in my speculation was that it didn't work out very well when HP tried to use 10-bit ATI with their DreamColor 2. Therefore to avoid complaining customers, Dell opted to ditch working their PremierColor out with ATI.

I think HP changed it towards the end of run to not allow the ATI graphics with the Dreamcolor2, you had to pick an Nvidia card. Not sure about early on.

the m7820 was always available, I have it in the 8740w which predates the dell IPS and the 8760w. Intel IGPs are the only ones unable to do 10 bit color

myself, Charles Jeffries and Aikimox and others, all had first run 8740w's with the fire pro cards

the ati's worked fine, it was more HP colormatch driver issues and getting the aero interface to work properly with a 10 bit mobile panel as the 8740w was the first to ever attempt it, we had issues with the quadros as well
