If I install my SSD from my XPS into my M6600 as the secondary HD will I be able to boot into that SSD and access all my programmes, files, just as I would if I was using it in the XPS?

I realise it is SATA II and I am currently using a Kingston Hyper X as the secondary SSD in the M6600, but it would be really useful if I could just plug in the SSD from the Samsung and be able to boot into that.

I do not think that there is any way to move everything (files, OS and programmes) from the XPS SSD to the Hyper X right?

    Thanks.

If this is an XPS of the same generation as the M6600, there's a decent chance it'll work (you may have to install new drivers, etc). Any older, and it probably won't. These things are kind of a crapshot, though, the only way to tell for sure is to test it. It may mess up the install, though, so watch out.

You have installed W7 on the XPS, and you want to move it to the Precision?

I don't think it will work, Windows registers an install to things like the MOBO, CPU, so if many things are different it may not boot properly :(

I've swapped a Vista HDD through 4 different desktop chipsets (AMD to Intel to Nvidia and back to Intel). It just wanted to reactivate the COA every single time and did not BSOD once. Vista/7 are ALOT friendlier with swapping entirely different computers. With XP you were lucky if it BSOD, usually it won't boot.

If you swap it and it doesn't work/BSOD then that's the worst that can happen.

Thanks for all the feedback. I may just give it a go and see what happens. I will be sure to image it first just in case. Thanks.
