Moving the touch screen on Lat 6520 or XPS 17?

    Hi folks,

I'm looking at getting a new laptop, and have salivated over the new Latitude 6520, as well as over the new XPS 17 (full HD in 3D!)

Now, for both of these machines there is an option of multi-touch screens, however this is only available on a lower resolution panel. Both machines also have higher resolution panels, but with no multi-touch.

Is it (realistically) possible to detach the touch-screen from the LCD panel, and retrofit it on another, higher-res panel? I am comfortable replacing the LCD-panel myself, but I do not know if this is at all feasible. Does the touch panel have a connection of it's own perhaps? Is the graphics card or even motherboard specifically ordered with or without touch inputs?

So many questions, so little info on the Dell site ) but think about it - XPS 17, 1920*1080, 3-D capable, *and* multi-touch. I would definitely want that!

I would assume that the touch is integrated into the panel? Otherwise why wouldn't they offer multi-touch with any screen resolution? On the Precisions, they are lower res as well.

Let me clarify my question - is it feasible to purchase an extra panel, lower res with touch, and then disassemble it to retrieve the touch panel?

Perhaps not the best example, but last week I replaced the touch screen on a Nintendo DS, and that was a separate overlay. Again, I understand that a multi-touch laptop is not the same as a small games touch screen for 0.99 USD plus shipping, but since I recently did it the example comes to mind.

If the touch screen is integrated, how much effort would it take to un-integrate it? Is it even possible?

No, no, and no. I doubt you'll be able to disassemble it, as it's not a resistive touchscreen.

My bad! I had plain forgotten about this old thread, and now that I have decided against the Lat 6520 I have gravitated towards the XPS forums.

For anybody else interested in this discussion, please refer to this other, newer thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/598680-l702x-combining-3d-multitouch.html

The replies I get are mostly "no this can not be done" however so far nobody has explained how the touch screen for an ipad is separate from the LCD, if it is 'impossible' to separate the touch digitizer layer from the actual display...

The Thinkpad W510 offered a FHD touchscreen. I don't know about compatibility though, and you probably require some components from the E6520 touchscreen assembly for it to work, if it even would work.
