Ok so recently my screen just went all crazy. The colors are all messed up and it's full of pixels. the color black is now green and white is now pinkish with lots of jumpy pixels. Any way to get it fixed? My warranty is over, and I don't know how I am going to get a replacement screen.

    Nvidia geForce 8400m ?

do we need to say more? It will fail completely very soon.

Lucky for you, Dell is doing a better job supporting customers who are affected by it, unlike HP, who would blatantly deny the existence of the problem even if you call them up for help.

Check out this site for more information regarding the faulty Nvidia GPU. My advice? Stay away from Nvidia, they have lost my confidence.

the same thing happened to my Vostro 1400 last night. My warranty ended over a year ago, so I think I'm screwed.

I read that their is a recall by Dell for Nvidia Geforce 8000M series, even if you are out of warranty, Dell will replace the motherboard (video card soldered on), with the second generation 8000M series, where the problem of the chip is corrected. But Contact Dell tech support for more info, as I might be mistaken.

Wow, so you will also stay away from all processor maker:
    - Intel for their high pitch sound producing power management control for their CPU when the system is plug-in. An issue still not fixed today...
    - Intel for lying the speed on their own Pentium 4 and M to sell more chips and try to compete with AMD.
    - AMD for selling 3-core CPU's.. claimed it's really 3 core.. while they are 4 cores where 1 of them is broken.
    - AMD for claiming that their socket AM2 CPU's is faster than their Socket 939 predecessor, when benchmark clearly shows the opposite.
    - ATI for releasing very unstable drivers as official for Vista AND Win7
    - ATI for making special drivers that cuts effects down when benchmark tool is detected, to cheat their way into a higher score.
    - ATI for using abysmal quality fans that breaks within month for their heatsink.. forcing you to buy a hetasink+fan replacement.
    - Creative maker of most laptop webcams and sound cards - decided to ditch making Vista drivers when the OS was released. It took several lawsuit and home-brew drivers to make Creative make the junk they call drivers, which contributes to a nice portion of system BSOD's, sleep, and hibernation problems
    - Intel Socket 1156 socket motherboard chipset where some devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch causes system problems when plug to the system via USB. And, to top it all off just to have the total monopoly on these motherboard chip sets, sues Nvidia to prevent them selling their own chip-set for the Core i5/i7 CPU's, and scares AMD from lawsuits for trying to make any.
    - Intel for make what they laughing call """"""""""""""""""GPU"""""""""""""""""".
    - Intel for making a GPU integrated to the north-bridge (Intel X4500HD) processor without adjusting the chip design for proper heat dispersion making system throttle to a halt when slightly under use by either processors (north-bridge or GPU), making all first OEM manufactures like Dell with their Latitude E series have a throttling problem (other manufacture uses a bigger (and of course, heavier) heatsink to solve the problem.

    and the list goes on...

So yea.. which processors manufacture will be on your next system? At least Nvidia problem was a simple accident in cutting a little bit too much on quality and the problem is solved shortly after.

Here is the link to Dell's one years warranty extension for the affected GPUs.

Personally I find that the Intel GPU is more than adequate for my needs and I also think that the throttling issue is caused by some very conservative temperature settings in the BIOS.
