I just got a used hard drive (Hitachi 100 gb, 7200 rpm). It had Vista loaded on it. I did a clean install of XP on it, installed all of the Drivers that came with my XP disc, and now the USB ports don't work. My computer can't "see" anything plugged into any of the USB ports.

I went to Dell.com and put in my service tag number and installed the drivers that came up. Rebooted several times. Still no USB.

Does anybody have any suggestions? The computer is working fine otherwise, but it would be nice to be able to use the USB's.

    Thanks in advance!

(btw, I've searched these forums, as well as general google search, and can't find any help.)

Do the USB ports work in BIOS? ie. can you use a USB keyboard to navigate the BIOS, etc?

I don't have a USB Keyboard to try at the moment.

The USB ports show in the Device Manager, but they all have a red exclamation point next to them.
When I click on one of them, it says:

*Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)*

One other data point: I put the old hard drive back in, and the USB ports all work fine. I'm guessing it's a driver?

Where does one find the driver for the USB ports?

You shouldn't need special drivers for the USB ports... I'd say your new XP install got corrupted somehow. Try to reinstall with a different XP disk, etc.

Reload Intel chipset driver from Dell or Intel's site (945 chipset).
