dropped my Vostro flat on its lid this weekend...

I can shine a bright light on the screen and see the Windows welcome screen but there is no "backlight" per se.

After a few Google searches it seems as if the inverter may be the issue. Any suggestions?

Does the lcd have to come out to install the inverter? If so I may just buy a matte screen to replace the current glossy one.

    thanks,
    Chris

It may be the inverter or the CFL backlights are broken.

I bought a new lcd that came with a new inverter already installed. I installed the new panel this morning AND still no "backlight"!

Could the lid switch somehow be the issue here?

I can hook my vostro up to an external monitor and see perfectly.

    You fixed this yet?
It can be the switch if it is depressed down - I've repaired many like this
But most have been the inverter. I remember 2 months ago, an inverter did not help a Dell laptop and in the end, it was the new LCD that did the trick.
I guess you need to also find out if the new one you bought does indeed work in the first place

If the LCD switch is in the closed position, the screen should be completely black. Try swapping the inverters, put the new one with your old LCD and see if it works.

Hi All. Fixed. The problem in my case was an issue somewhere within the main cable that plugs into the the inverter / lcd. Mr. Notebook here in ATX fixed the issue after I gave up - they said this was a relatively uncommon failure point.
