I've got Dell Latitude C 640. I had to reinstall the operating system from recovery disks. All was smooth.
Now, when I'm trying to install a driver for the wireless adapter it asks me to remove the adapter first. I can't find it to remove it.
    Help.

I have not worked on the D640 before however, do you have a hard-switch/rocker switch around the laptop anywhere? If so, is it on/off?
Failing that, try using the function keys to turn it on (Fn+ the F key that has a aerial symbol on it)

Do you actually see it in device manager?

If so, might just be easier doing a right click>update driver>point to extracted driver folder

the dell C640 - pentium IV - doesn't have a wireless adapter as basic hardware

was your modified or added via pcmcia?

if its via pcmcia, install the driver first before inserting it at the pcmcia slot

if ever it has an internal pci mini wireless, then try to enable / disable it via device manager

The device manager lists only ethernet adapter not wireless. So, I can't disable anything in order for the driver to be installed. It persistantly want me to remove the adapter first.

MDR8850, I've got nothing in this slot. It's an internal sitting somewhere.

if its internal, then you have to switch it.......you need to look for the switch at the sides or top of the laptop

it may not be a physical switch

could be a combination of FN key + the number key with wireless icon on it
