    IT'S UNDER MY NAME!!!

yes commander, you are totally right, in fact this machine WAS, and i repeat WAS, under the public sector and healthcare, but now it's at my name.

i already called dell and they are going to send me a replacement. now I just need to figure out how to include the missing parts. the thing that concerns me the most is the power adapter, there was a 65w that came with the machine but those are hard to find cheap or original.

    what do you guys suggest?

how smaller is the e4300 keyboard compared to the e6400?

PS: the company i got it from it's exactly a recycling company in NJ...

    (i) You might try chucking in a 65W PA-12 PSU instead of the newer slim model.

(ii) The E4300 and E6400 keyboards have a different layout. You will just have to spend $15 unless you can find someone selling a broken E4300 keyboard for less.

Just wondering why an organization would pay for CompleteCare if their insurance covered the loss? I've never come across a situation where an organization was covered under CompleteCare AND insurance. Also, a claim is usually filed when there is a loss.

    Of course, anything is possible.

Organizations do surplus equipment which others find useful. There are many reasons: the laptop might be near the end of its life cycle and have performance or reliability issues, or support is too expensive, or parts/service is hard to get, or the equipment is mostly depreciated. But in those cases, the laptop has been owned long enough for the CompleteCare coverage to expire.

Sometimes, a laptop is in the condition described in this thread because it was stolen. I obtain some form of proof of ownership/purchase from the seller, to avoid buying stolen property.

I am still not totally clear about dell's policy.
say that the laptop came with a 80GB HDD, I buy a 160GB one and then get rid of the 80GB. If the 160GB breaks and I ask for a replacement I will get an 80GB one, and that's clear. But do they want me to send them back the 80GB or will they accept the 160GB?

They told me they are going to send me a new system and then I have to send them back the broken one, but I am thinking to request to have this new system shipped without hdd, so I can just buy what I want, and take a small risk of being replace with a smaller hdd in the future.

can someone clarify this for me?

    thanks

as times goes on I am more and more confused.
I just chat with this dell rep that told me not to worry about any missing part.
I am gonna take him on his word and I'll just send in what I have.
