Does anyone know when they might release a new docking station for the precision m4600/m6600? I saw a post on a previous thread about the release cycles but couldn't find it via search. When do you guys think a new docking station will come out? I am hoping for USB3 for a backup drive.

Do these laptops not support the standard E-series docks? To maintain compatibility, they won't redesign docking solutions mid-cycle if it supports existing docking stations.

Since that's the case and current docks have pretty much everything you need, I doubt Dell will release any new docking stations just for USB 3.0. Not sure where you got that info from.

I didn't have any info... Thats why I was asking. I figured someone who had been around these forums for a while would know when the most recent docking station was released. They also might know when the previous model was released. From that information I was hoping to gather an idea of when the next model would be released. It would be nice to have USB 3 and more display ports... I'm trying to determine whether to wait for the next version or not.

For backups and external storage, just get an eSATA dock (single or dual). You have one eSATA connector in the docking station - and I assume one on your computer, both can be used concurrently. There is no speed advantage for USB3 over eSATA for hard drives - and eSATA allows you to monitor the SMART status of your drive (which USB rarely does).

Frankly, with my current experience with USB3, I would not want to use it. As to the likelyhood of a new E Series docking station: very unlikely.

Finally: research the meaning of the character "?". Hint: you use it to mark a title in a forum as a question - rather than a statement of fact.

The current E-series docking were released with the first generation E-series laptops. The previous docking stations were for the D-series and released with the first generation D-series.

The next docking station will be released with the next family of Latitudes. USB 3.0 support for docking station will probably not be for the E-series.
