All latest Vostros are equipped with Intel HM67 chipset and support SATA 3 (6 Gbps) on SATA ports 0 to 1 and SATA 2 (3 Gbps) on ports 2 to 5. With SATA 2 SSDs there won't be any difference in performance between the internal bay and the optical bay/caddy. With SATA 3 SSDs the problem is that the optical drive uses SATA port 4 (at least on the 3350), so the speed of such drive in that bay will be limited to SATA 2. BTW, eSATA port uses port 5, which means no SATA 3 operation on external devices too.

Thats the internal frame, which comes with the laptop and has nothing to do with optical bay caddy.

    I have the 3550
NOISE: My i3 cpu is currently at 55c, no fan on. I hace 65+ chrome tabs open and cpu speed is at lowest freq. Computer runs really quiet. I went from a Probook 4330s to the Vostro 3550 because of the quiet/off fan. The Probook was cooler, ran at 40c but fan was always on lowest speed.

KEYBOARD: The 3550 keyboard feels cheap in comparison with the Probook 4330s. Overall i would take the Probook over the Vostro for build quality. The Vostro 3550 also have some issues with the Intel Wireless 1030 card.

Screen quality is better at the Vosto

Many thanks, badmann and mkj, for your kind replies and for reassuring me on the "quiet" fan. I am a bit disappointed about the keyboard... but I guess, as you said some posts ago, that the Vostro is definitely a budget business notebook. The Probook 4530s is more appealing under some point of views, but its fan issue is definitely a deal-breaker.

In the Vostro configuration I selected there's an i5-2410, but I assume that an i3-2310 would be ok as well for office, internet and general multimedia tasks. Does the different CPU have an impact on the noise level, in your opinion?

A side question: does the Vostro 3550 support Intel Wireless Display?

Many thanks again for your help! :)

Looking at Intel's ARK, the i3-2310M runs with lower clock rate (2.1 GHz vs 2.3 GHz) and doesn't have Turbo Boost, which can spike the clock rate on the i5-2410M up to 2.9 GHz. So yes, the i3 will run slightly cooler, which means the fan will kick in less often. And yet it is still a decent CPU. Certainly good enough for the tasks you mentioned.

As far as I know, the Intel 1030 has Intel Wireless Display capability. I believe the Intel 1030 is the "default" wireless NIC if you don't customise that option...
