Not surprised that there's no IPS display for the M4800. They haven't been able to work out the tint issue going back to the M4600. Though I am surprised there will be no IPS for the M6800. I know that lots of people really like the IPS display.

Maybe it will show up in the Covet (later?) if they still have that. The article doesn't mention the Covet (though they do show it in the picture), and the M6700 Covet was released a bit later than the regular model.

As for the 3200x1800 display, another disappointment that it is not in the M6800, I would certainly be interested in such a thing. However, I imagine that 17" laptop sales only continue to slip, this is why Lenovo and Apple dropped their 17" offerings. Probably tough to make the case to some manufacturer to build such a screen if there are very few machines to use it in.

In any case, it'll be a while before I'm ready to buy another machine so I'll just watch and see what happens from here. :)

    [Edit]
The photo in the Tweakers article is the same one used in the original M4700/M6700 announcement from Dell.

So, naturally, those are probably not M4800/M6800 machines on display. Also, this means there's no telling if a Covet will be rolling out. M6600->M6700 introduced a few tweaks to the chassis so I imagine that will continue. Still might be some minor surprises.

The 3200 x 1800 should be ips or w.e better panel tech, a high res TN? not likely.

No IPS on the M6800, seriously, Dell, that is screwed up, way to loose customers to HP.

I doubt they'd abandon it totally. No doubt a preparation for a PLS upgrade or something better?

There's just too much industry this laptop caters to to abandon it completely. I known for me as a visual artist, it would have been a deal breaker. Its that important.

HP did have dream color 1 ips 8740w first when dell is running a rgb-led tn m6500 (think alienware 17x r2 screen).

Nothing is confirmed yet, so take it easy on speculations...

Several Dell guys I've talked to said that that ips-display will be available as an option when you order.

Hope that they will be arrived with Windows 8.1 preinstalled, or else I dont see a point with that high resolution display (3200X1800).

True, there is nothing set in stone and no official comment from Dell so far. That won't prevent us from commenting on what has been said so far true or not. :p I'm hoping for IPS to be there, but I might as well expect the worse, that way i'll be pleasantly surprised if the IPS display ends up being there.

Windows 8.1 is set to hand off to OEMs in "late August", so if the September timeframe holds out I think this is likely. Though they will surely continue to sell the machines with Windows 7 as well, since that is where most businesses want to be.

Yes, Windows 7 is still more than enough, but Windows 8.1 is required for the higher res display because of high dpi.
