DVD drive came with laptop and was working?

Is it fully in place? Remove and replace.

    Reboot.

Will it play a music CD?

Thank you(!!) for responding. It is fully in place. It will not react at all when a CD is placed inside and the door closed. I tried to totally remove the drive but there doesn't seem to be the 'usual' parts in place along the sides of the open drive to allow for that.

P.S. It worked in the beginning when the laptop was new. It just quit working one day. It indicates 'problems' in Device Manager. I tried uninstalling it and scanning for new hardware, but that didn't 'fix' anything. Perhaps I can get info from DELL's online manual about removing the drive. I fixed this same problem on a Toshiba laptop by editing the Registry, but can't remember how I did that.

Try booting the Windows installation disk that came with the computer (or any other bootable disk) and see if that works.

I've seen optical drive "failures" that were the result of an OS that needed to be reinstalled. These drives don't often fail, especially since they are used so infrequently nowadays.

I think that has a PATA / IDE interface so the master / slave / cable select business applies. Is the burner recognised by the BIOS? Did you change the HDD? Can you boot off the optical drive if the HDD is removed?

You should not need to mess with the Registry.

If the device that was working is now troubled in Device Manager, then this suggests a hardware issue. I would remove and re-install the drive unit to be sure it is connected. Then boot into the BIOS to be sure no DVD drive is disabled. If no joy then, I would suspect a faulty drive. Swapping in a working spare would be a useful test.

If you remove and install the drive while in Windows, Windows should detect this activity if the drive/bay is healthy. If no response, then the drive/bay may be dead; or switched OFF in the BIOS... perhaps.

Oh, that *could* require messing with the Registry! :)
