Got a Dell Laptop Latitude d830.

When I try to load windows XP disk it gives me a PCI.SYS blue screen.
Now I have tried several windows XP Disks and same thing.
I went out searching oh how to make a boot disk and made one but then it say's that it can't for the operating system.

Got the Seagate software, but cannot make a boot disk from my home computer. Looks like getting a new Hard Drive.

    Thanks for any help.

Are you saying that your system errors trying to boot from XP on the HDD?

Will it boot from an XP CD in the ODD?

Will it boot and run a Dell Diagnostics CD in the ODD?

I had the same error with my D630, used a different cd drive with the same xp disc and it worked. Fortunately I had a spare cd/dvd drive.

Files on the HDD are messed up, trying to reload a new XP Pro from CD. Don't have any of the Dell Disks. It will start to reload the XP windows cd and then get the blue screen about the PCI.Sys.

Suspect the HDD, the ODD, and the OS CD.

Remove the HDD. Reseat the ODD. And try the OS CD again.

Then try a different OS CD.

    Then try a different ODD.

    Then try a new HDD.

    Then suspect your MB.

Tried a different disk and still same thing, just used the disk on another laptop and it worked. Going to take hard drive to a shop and have them check it. Any suggestions on where to buy the best deal on a HDD.

Did you try booting the OS CD with the hard drive removed... if successful, you could suspect the hard drive. Are you using the BIOS boot menu F10 or F12 to boot directly from the OS CD in the cd drive... to bypass the suspect hard drive?

PCI.sys is a Windows system file. You might see reference to this file when crashing while trying to boot from a hard drive that has file system issues, but you should not see reference to this file (or be crashing) if you are booting directly from a healthy OS CD in the cd drive.

Decide on hard drive make, interface, and capacity; then shop newegg.com for initial pricing and reviews; then try to find a better deal locally or on amazon.com or microcenter.com... etc. I've been pretty happy with Western Digital mid-line drives of late.

Took Hard Drive out and still got same error, maybe memory. Computer was working just fine, got my files off and then tried to reinstall Win XP and then started having problems.

Google suggests you might need XP SP2.
